Each year I like to try something new, take a class to try something I haven't done before. After going to a local printer's fair for the second year in a row, I found myself making the same resolution - I have to try this!! Luckily there's a great community art center on the peninsula, and they offered a Saturday printmaking class - perfect!
We had the opportunity to try several different types of printmaking on large vintage presses, and silk screening too - I have new respect for anything silk screened :) My fave project was linocut, this celtic knotwork was carved (by moi) into battleship lino, then printed on heavy water soaked printer's paper, with the press cranked down pretty hard so it came out with a lot of texture. Linocut/carved blocks are a lot like rubber stamps, no wonder I love them!
I'm so grateful for the opportunity to try something new, keep my mind expanding, and for my fellow printers who were a very diverse and fun group to work with. The thing that propelled me into a printmaking class was a passion for letterpress printing, and we didn't do that in this class, so I think a letterpress class is in my future this year.
Are you planning to try something new in 2011?
